Ive been told to have 6 weeks off work due to a operation on my shoulder but work have said ive got to go back

Have you been at your job for a year or more. If so use the federal family medical leave act which gives you 12 week of unpaid leave and protects you from losing your job. Somebody's going to get sued

If you get a doctors note then there is nothing they can do. Have you got a union you can speak to?

Make sure you get the relivant sick note from the doctor and there is knothing work can do about it.
You are unfit for work and if you went in without being fully well or recovered for your operation what would work say if you had an accident there.
Throw health and safety policy at them they will soon change tune.

If the doc signs you off work totally then if you have an accident at work or hurt someone then you or your employer is not insured.
You are entitled to sick leave whether it is paid or unpaid whatever your companies and countrys policy.
If they fire you then you can sue for unfair dismissal.

Ask the surgeon to provide your employer with a medical excuse for being away from work . You get it and have it sent to your employer. Take medical leave. Check with human resources at the job about this. If none of this applies, ie the place you work pressures you, get in touch with your states employment commission regarding your rights. You have enough problems healing from surgery. and remember, its YOUR shoulder and you need it to heal well.
