Lifting weights without strengthening your back?

if you lift freewights and only work on arms and shoulders, can you end up hurting your back because your back muscles are not strong enough to support the heavy weights?
Answer:
You definitely could ... particularly if you are attempting to lift too much weight and cheat by using your back to help lift the weight, which I see all the time in gyms all over. But why would you want to just lift for your arms and shoulders? You need to address all body parts to have a strong and balanced body. Muscular imbalances in the body can lead to problems down the line, like back pain.
yes you need to squat as well to strengthen ur lower back which takes the most stress
yes you definatley can. my husband did that in highschool from lifting weights for football and now he has bursitis in the back . Wich is very painful
